A Special Message about a Unique Idea
“You only need one like.” ~God
There is a lot of pressure to get “likes” on social media. An obsession for some, a source of depression for others. In the Chrisitan world, really one “like” is necessary, and that is from God. If we get everything right in our lives, but we don’t have the one “like” from God, we’ve really missed the boat, because God’s “like” is the one that leads to salvation and eternal life. Hence, the idea of “You only need one like. ~God” came into being.
We’ve started a website, www.youonlyneedonelike.com, where you can purchase merchandise with this phrase on it. There are lots of items including t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, coffee cups, hats and other things. These can be customized as far as color and size. They can also be personalized with names or parish names.
To encourage you to “like” my message and share it would go against the spirit of this idea of only needing one like. It’s not about likes. Only one like is needed. However, we know that “likes” drive messages, and I certainly hope this one goes far. After a lot of thought and prayer, I have decided that any income that I derive from merchandise purchased from www.youonlyneedonelike.com will be donated to charity–primarily to Smile Train (which provides treatment for Cleft Palate patients who cannot afford it), and to cancer research. If you choose to like this message, share it, or support it through purchasing merchandise, the winner will be charity.
Virtually every great idea starts small. Some small ideas never grow. And some grow and become world-changing ideas. Three years ago, I gave two sermons to two different groups of people, talking about the pressure of getting “likes” on social media. At the end of each sermon, I said “At the end of the day, you only need one like, and that’s from God.” Someone said to me on both occasions, “You should trademark that phrase.” And thus, the idea of “You only need one like. ~God” was born. I have always believed that God honors the effort, more than the outcome. May the outcome of this effort help to spread an important message. May it help some worthy charitable causes. And may we always remember that “you only need one like,” the one that comes from God.

Lord, You are the Creator and Author of all things. You have fixed times, seasons and thoughts for each of our lives. Thank You for the thought that You put on my heart three years ago, which has given birth to this message. There is no way to know if this message will go far or not, but at the outset, this message is dedicated to You. May Your name be blessed in this venture, and may Your blessings come down on those who participate in it and the charitable causes that will be helped by it. Amen.
